LUNCH&LEARN is an internal activity of VAN•HOA, in which we will invite 'notorious' guests in the creative practice village to enjoy an intimate lunch together, chat, share, and "re-learn" each other's knowledge, skills and experiences.
Have you ever heard of the documentary “Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava” - the film selected to be screened and appreciated at the Festival De Cannes Docs Co-Production Speed Meetings? Last week, VAN•HOA had an interesting LUNCH&LEARN session with the "father" of the movie "Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava" - young director Nong Nhat Quang.
Quang is a member of Hanoi Doclab and a founding member of Doc Cicada - a group of independent filmmakers in Hanoi. “Baby Jackfruit Baby Guava” is his first feature-length documentary film and is highly appreciated by experts, so it is an honor to receive funding from the IDFA Bertha Fund - as part of a series of supporting families Filmmaking of the Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival.
Coming to LUNCH&LEARN this time, Mr. Quang shared a lot of great knowledge about the filmmaking process, the creative process in documentaries as well as how to collect and research documents. To produce a movie, there are 3 stages: pre-production, production, and post-production. Pre-production is the time when we write the script, research, work with the character, familiarize the character with the camera, test shoot - this is the step for us to shape the movie we want to make. Next comes the production step, which is the process of going to the location to shoot and do all the things you need. Finally, in post-production, filmmakers need to edit and edit movies from the footage they have shot. In documentaries, there are also three such stages, but one good point about documentaries is that it is not clear that each step needs to be performed in turn because the documentary needs to work with reality and there is absolutely no the script.
In his first movie - Search, he chose the topic of a dating app for LGBT friends. Unlike other film genres, the language shown in documentaries is extremely diverse, without any framing. The characters in the movie are friends who used dating apps who used to match with Quang and go on dates and meet each other. In "Search" it is not necessary to fully depict the image of the character, but only the hands, feet, ... of the character, but it is enough for viewers to understand the content that Quang wants to convey. Only with hastily shot frames, the audio file records the conversation but creates the magical beauty of the movie, perhaps because it brings a sense of closeness as if we were living in those movies.
Having made many types of films, Mr. Nong Quang feels that his creativity is satisfied in the most documentary genre. At first, people will think this documentary is boring, but in fact, this is a fertile soil that helps VAN•HOA team explore a lot from the actual materials around him.
